Open Access and Research Metrics

Let’s talk about research metrics, notably journal and article metrics, in an open access context. Is open access content read and hence cited more widely? Do open access journals have a higher impact factor than non-OA journals, or vice versa? And how does flipping a journal from closed to open affect the Impact Factor? Should we be looking at other metrics for open access content? And what are authors looking for, when choosing journals to submit their articles to? Our panelists will share their insights and possible answers to these questions through short presentations and a discussion.

Wow! We just wrapped up our last educational webinar in 2022, and what a great way to end the year. For this webinar, we talked about research metrics with a particular focus on article and journal metrics with our three speakers; Rod Cookson from IWA Publishing, Domenic Rosati from scite, and Catriona McCallum from Hindawi Publishing. Our Head of Publisher Relations, Romy Beard, moderated the webinar.

First up was Rod Cookson who talked about the changes in metrics that IWA Publishing journals have seen after flipping to open access. Rod also discussed what types of metrics are useful for different stakeholders like libraries, publishers, and authors.

Up next was Domenic Rosati who talked about how scite checks citations to verify how research has been supported, mentioned, and contrasted. Domenic also shared some insights into how this differs for open vs closed content.

Our last speaker was Catriona McCallum who talked about the transparency of metrics; what metrics can and should be open, and which ones should not. Catriona also shared Hindawi’s approach to this.

After the speakers’ presentations, Romy Beard shared an example of research metrics on the ChronosHub platform, and then it was time for our Q&A round, where we had some very interesting questions from our audience to our speakers.
