SDGs in the workflow

Yesterday, we hosted an educational webinar focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the workflow. Our panel of speakers included Dana Compton representing SDG Publishers Compact, Sara Yow from Cell Press, and Tyler Ruse from Digital Science. Our webinar was moderated by Romy Beard.

Dana Compton was our first speaker. She highlighted the significance of SDGs in scholarly publishing and the support available through the SDG Publishers Compact. She also stressed the broad scope of SDGs, encompassing inclusion, diversity, education, health, and more, making them relevant across the research landscape.

Sara Yow was up next and discussed how the journals Chem and Chem Catalysis incorporate UN SDGs into their workflow. She emphasized the importance of providing context in research articles, in an effort to bridge the gap between experts and non-experts. Linking articles directly to UN SDGs enhances this effort by connecting research to global sustainability goals.

Tyler Ruse from Digital Science then shared insights into how they integrated UN SDGs into their Dimension product. Digital Science developed a machine-learning model for classifying documents according to SDGs, and their visualizations showcased variations in SDG alignment across publication types. This data even aids publishers in making informed decisions about SDG applications.
